The Commonweal Institute will co-sponsor
“After Bush: The Case for Continuity in American Foreign Policy”,
an upcoming author speaking event with the World Affairs Council (WAC) in San Francisco.
The presentation, based on a book by the same name, will focus on the history of U.S. foreign policy,
the current state of events in Iraq and Middle East,
and what changes we can anticipate in the foreign policy from the perspective of President Bush's successor.
Authors Timothy Lynch (University of London) and Robert S. Singh argue that George W. Bush’s
foreign policy moves have actually been consistent with past foreign policies from both Republican and
Democratic presidencies—and that the key elements of Bush’s grand strategy will continue to shape the
American approach in the future.

Bloggers and the Green Economy
Commonweal Institute will be a sponsor of the Netroots Nation conference in Austin, Texas, July 17-20. This annual conference brings together progressive bloggers and activists from across the country, and is a strong magnet for politicians and the media.
We encourage you to attend!
Of special interest will be a workshop led by Fellow Dave Johnson: “Bloggers and the Green Economy.”
Here is a preview of “Bloggers and the Green Economy”:
What can bloggers do to advance the green cause in its various manifestations? This session features a conversation about how bloggers can support and organize around the efforts of environmental justice activists, union leaders, and government officials to create a new Green Economy. Each of the panelists will speak for about five minutes about the type of work they do in relation to the environment; e.g., leading grassroots campaigns for environmental justice; proposing and developing support for green legislation; and leading efforts to incorporate green practices into union contracts. The moderator will then lead the panel in discussing how the type of work that bloggers do, as online citizen journalists and activists, has contributed to those efforts and specific ways in which bloggers might increase their impact in advancing green issues and public awareness of the green cause.
Confirmed panelists thus far:
Dave Johnson, Moderator, is the lead blogger at Seeing the Forest. He is a featured contributor at Huffington Post and writes at many other sites including MyDD, AlterNet, CommonDreams, DailyKos, and Speak Out California.
Susana Almanza, an award-winning activist, is a founding member and Co-Director of PODER (People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources), a grassroots environmental, economic and social justice organization.
Larry Joe Doherty, Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives in the 10th Congressional District of Texas, a successful Houston attorney and a rancher, is known for his strong stands on environmental issues and legal ethics.
The fourth panelist is yet to be confirmed, but is likely to come from SEIU to represent labor’s perspective.
The union has recently launched a Green Initiative aimed at incorporating a number of pro-environment positions in labor contracts.
